I used to love Fridays. But Fridays in the Psychiatry Department are not my fav day of the week. Although it may seem cool to most people, I wish it could be a lil more than what it is now.
Basically we’ll have our AM Passover Meeting as usual on all other days – we discuss about the cases in the ward, new cases in the casualty the night before and new referrals yet to be discussed on the previous day’s PM Passover. Then we skip the ward rounds (the medical officers will do their own rounds much later in the afternoon). The morning continues with a powerpoint case presentation by an MO, a psychiatric journal presentation by an MO, a topic presentation by an MO/specialist and a topic/journal presentation by a nurse/medical attendant. Sometimes we’ll have video shows by drug companies as well. Just before noon, we have the weekly MANDARIN CLASS. Yeah, this is funny but our HOD wanted us (except me) to learn some simple Chinese so we can communicate with our patients better. Usually by that time I just couldn’t wait to get out of the seminar room. The longer I sit, the flatter my bum become.
Most would have loved the periodical “feeding” in between presentations, which I think is not really necessary. Food will only induce post-prandial effect and makes me more sleepy and dull. I’ll be yawning like a hippopotamus.
Then comes the long lunch break. 12.15pm to 2.45pm!! Can you imagine that? Oh, by the way, that’s the standard Friday lunch break for all government servants. The Muslims will go do their prayers. I could have gone home and sleep, but chances are I won’t wake up till after dinnertime so I better don’t risk it. After lunch, we’ll see new referrals (if there’s any) and do our own rounds. Then before you know it, it’s 5pm and everybody’s crowding over the punchcard machine you can’t even see the wall.
That’s Friday for me at work. Kinda boring huh?
